WooHoo.... I finally put my damn x-mas list together in one place. Now you can see what I really want.

Very cool...
Apple releases [IP over Firewire Preview Release]. For those who don't know, FireWire is a sort of uber-serial connection that replaced SCSI for mass-storage (hard drives, CD drives, etc.) for Macs, and is the same thing that modern DV cam corders use (Sony's iLink is FireWire minus a pin, the two are interchangable). It's hot-pluggable, so you can plug and unplug stuff on the fly, and it's VERY fast. Current FireWire is almost the speed of GigaBit ethernet - so IP over firewire would let you transfer files between two machines very quickly. It would be really cool if Linksys came up with a simple FireWire to Ethernet Bridge so that an IP over FireWire network could be connected to a larger ethernet network or a cable modem. Right now you could do that yourself pretty easily by using a MacOS X machine as gateway between the FireWire network and an Ethernet network. If you want to use IP over FireWire with MacOS 9 or Windows, Unibrain's [FireNet] has been doing IP over FireWire for a couple of years.

I'm actually feeling a lot better today, which is good, though I'm still dripping like a French oil tanker. Blarg!

Saw [this] listed on MacNN today, in some ways it's similar to my mail client, but apparently only works with mail downloaded by Apple's Mail client. I can't see why it would be difficult for the author to add IMAP support to it... which would be pretty handy for anyone with a mac.com account.

I have to admit, [this] is the most interesting thing I've seen all day:
The study, which is bound to provoke controversy, showed that the women who were directly exposed to semen were less depressed. The researchers think this is because mood-altering hormones in semen are absorbed through the vagina. They say they have ruled out other explanations.

The question many people will ask is whether oral sex could have the same mood-enhancing effects. "Since the steroids in birth control pills survive the digestion process, I would assume that the same holds true for at least some of the chemicals in semen," Gallup says.

Well, isn't THAT interesting?

Post-nasal drip
Ug. I've been sick the last two days, and while it could be much worse, like when I had strep throat for more than a week last year, the constantly runny nose is getting to be pretty annoying. Hopefully I'll be over it soon.

This morning my new screen protector gadgets arrived from [Developer Depot]. The last few versions of PowerBooks have lids that close awfully tight, so the seemingly insignificant fingertip oils you leave on the keyboard end up leaving marks on the screen. With my PowerBook G4 it's more pronounced than with the old WallStreet, so I decided to do something about it (mostly because it's annoying to have to mind the little key-outlines left on the screen, partly because who knows what kind of long term wear this will have). I got the WildEepz display cushions to securely keep the PB closed, and the ScreenProtectorz, both from RadTech via Developer Depot. Total cost ended up being just over $20. You can see both products [here] The attention to detail on both products was impressive, both came with instructions that were clear, and the screen cushions came with a template you lay on your screen that lets you install the cushions very precisely. The other product I had looked at seriously (several vendors have solutions for this problem) was the [iSkin protector], which is more like a thin membrane that covers your keyboard. Looks neat, but at $25, I felt more comfortable trying out the WildEepz and ScreenProtectorz anyway.

Both the RadTech products that I got and probably the iSkin would make good stocking stuffers for your favorite Mac RoadWarrior. After a few weeks of using these I'll probably write up a more detailed review and send it over to [Jason]
